Morning Tide Shawl

Take 20% off with the code Morning through June 7.

I designed this shawl in Fort Lauderdale. The multi-row shell pattern causes the stitches to undulate across the shawl, just like the waves on the beach in the morning.

The triangular shawl is worked from one vertex, increasing along one edge with jagged decreases along the other edge. After reaching the middle of the shawl, the decreases get larger creating a symmetric shawl.

A small amount of yarn goes a long way with this pattern, so it is great for that special skein you've been saving. The construction means the size is completely adjustable and the pattern works with many yarn weights. Instructions are also included to make an increase only shawl.

Level: Intermediate There is one special puff stitch, which is detailed in the picture tutorial. The pattern features an 8 row repeat. (The increase edge changes slightly on each row.) Within each row, there is a 12 stitch repeat. In addition to the written pattern, there is a detailed picture tutorial and the pattern is fully charted.

Size: Adjustable: The pictured shawl used 100g of fingering weight yarn and is 62”/ 157.5 cm wide and 10.25”/ 26 cm deep before blocking and 72”/ 183 cm wide and 12”/ 30.5 cm deep after blocking. You will work the increase pattern until you have used approximately 2/3 of your yarn, then work the decrease pattern. For the increase only version, you work the shawl until it reaches your desired size.

The pattern is written in English using US crochet terms. The PDF download includes:

  • The complete pattern for the shawl
  • Instructions to create an increase only shawl
  • Charts (3) for the entire pattern.
  • A picture tutorial with 27 pictures detailing every row
  • A list of materials
  • A list of abbreviations Two pdfs are included: a printer friendly pattern and a longer tutorial.

I made the pictured shawl with Cape May Fiber Sock and a D (3.25 mm) crochet hook.
